Basil is one of the main ingredients in pesto—a green Italian oil-and-herb sauce. Pesto's other ingredients are olive oil, garlic, and pine nuts. It is made by grinding the ingredients together into a paste and is used in many Italian recipes.

Some interesting facts: basil is believed to be native to India; it is a member of the large mint family; It has long been used as an embalming and preserving herb, found in mummies of ancient Egypt; In Europe, basil is placed in the hands of the dead to ensure a safe journey; Basil is also known as St. Joseph's wort.

Try this strawberry and basil lemonade drink on these hot days.

Ingredients:... serves 4 • 1 cup strawberries, hulled • 1/4 cup basil (or mint) • 1 cup lemon juice (4-6 lemons) • 1 cup simple syrup* • 4 cups water • ice crushed or cubes to taste Directions 1. Puree the strawberries and basil in a food processor or blender and optionally strain through a fine mesh sieve. 2. Mix the strawberry and basil puree, lemon juice, simple syrup, water and ice and enjoy.

*Simple syrup: Simmer 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved and chill before using.

Tip: Add gin or other alcohol for an adult version!
